In making The Wall SL one goal was to concentrate on replicating a memorial of respect, without political focus; and, in consequence to demonstrate how 3D environments can help teach, educate, and hopefully spark reflective thought in people regardless of culture. Memorials serve an important function in any society. They help us remember, teach important life lessons, and are evocative places to meditate and reflect. Memorials also instruct those, by virtue of age, who were not directly touched by an event.
Virtual environments hold great potential, giving veterans (and others) with traveling concerns or mobility issues the opportunity to participate and share in an otherwise inaccessible experience. Whilst it is impossible to truly capture the perfect essence and emotional power of the real life Vietnam Memorial, it is our expectation that this project will provide a catalyst for people not only to remember and honor those who died and the families who lost loved ones, but also to instill a desire to learn more about history.
